Interview with Artist Kris Goto from Honolulu
So, tell us a little about yourself and your creations:
Hi! My name is Kris Goto and I am an artist living and working in Honolulu Oahu. I was born in Japan, spent my upbringing in Hong Kong and New Zealand before moving to the islands in 2006. I am a pen on paper artist, occasionally I work on murals.
What inspires the art that you create?
There isn’t a specific thing I do for inspiration. I think it comes from all corners of my day to day island living - just observing and zoning out to the sound of nature, sometimes uncles and aunties talking stories to driving through the Waikiki commotion. I think ideas are all over the place!
What is the biggest challenge you face as an artist/entrepreneur?
The biggest challenge is to not let emotions interfere when making business decisions. Also having a better narrative for my works. I was born with it, so I find it very difficult to explain it to others. It feels like me trying to explain to an alien how my lungs work.
What have you learned that you would love to share with others starting their artistic journey?
Don’t let anyone talk you out of it.
How long have you been surfing and what does surfing mean to you?
I’ve been surfing since 2009. Surfing teaches me to be humble and grateful, and it is a blessing. I think surfers should smile more when they’re in the waters.
