Meet Tel Aviv-based Artist Nushke'e

Nushke'e is a creative living in Tel Aviv, Israel who shares with us her passion for illustrating freedom through her pieces as a way of coping with the conflict and unpredictable situations that her country has experienced since she has resided there. She credits the Mediterranean Sea and surf culture for a majority of her inspiration to create. Join us as we learn a bit about her personal story and journey as an Artist.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF …

I’m a tel Aviv-based artist.

I have lived a few minutes’ drive from the sea for as long as I can remember. The Mediterranean sea has always been my biggest inspiration due to its bright blue colour.

I studied visual communication and graphic design, and I’ve been working as a freelance designer since I finished school.

My first surf illustration was made on a plane on the way back to Tel Aviv from Portugal. I was full of information from the rich surf culture there.

I found my true passion is to create art that feels like freedom.

HOW DO YOU VIEW THE WORLD AROUND YOU? HOW DOES THIS TRANSLATE INTO YOUR ART?

Living in Israel hasn’t been easy for me. We have a lot of conflict and are in a pretty complicated situation. My art is my getaway from all of the noise around. It is my chance to create a better, more quiet world

WHAT INSPIRES YOU/YOUR ART? (IF YOU CAN, DESCRIBE A REAL-LIFE SITUATION THAT INSPIRED YOU)

My biggest inspiration is the oceans and seas, surf culture, and beautiful beaches. I was walking in Ericeira, Portugal, when I first saw the magic quiver surf shop. The unique surfboards that look like candy caught my eyes, and I immediately wanted to illustrate them.

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST ROLE MODEL?

I have to say I don’t have a specific role model. My art is inspired by nature and beautiful moments. However, I truly appreciate female artists who know how to expose their work and take an active role in the art world.

HOW DO YOU USUALLY WORK ON PIECES? ANY SPECIFIC RITUALS?

I usually choose an inspiration picture. I work with Adobe Illustrator to create digital illustrations. First, I make an outline of the piece, and then I go on to coloring.

HOW HAS YOUR ART CHANGED OVER TIME?

When I started illustrating, l was depicting specific people. Now my art is more abstract.

My illustrations became more about beautiful moments and pieces of life.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACE AS AN ARTIST/ENTREPRENEUR?

My biggest challenge these days is to promote my work. Unfortunately, I’m not the biggest social media person. I have to learn more about exposing my art to the world.

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?

Be true to yourself

DO YOU SURF? IF SO, WHERE’S YOUR FAVORITE SURF SPOT?

I started surfing when I was 18 years old. Still, very soon, I realized that I’m better at illustrating surfers than surfing myself. The waves scared me a little, and I concluded that surfing was not for me. One of the reasons that the surf culture inspires me so much is the unfinished business I have with overcoming my fear.
