Meet Surfer Vanessa Yeager From Costa Mesa, California

So, tell us a little about yourself:

I am Vanessa Grace Yeager from Costa Mesa, California. I am a local surfer and my home break is Blackies, Newport Beach. I have been surfing since I was a teenager and it’s always been my dream to surf and travel. I am originally from the Inland Empire but I have lived in Orange County since I was 18 years old. This is definitely where I call home now. I am a physical education teacher and I work at the local high school with students with special needs and I also work for Visit Huntington Beach as an ambassador for the city. I also teach and coach private surf lessons and I substitute teach English at night at the local adult school. In the summertime, I also work at Cal state long beach with foreign exchange students teaching water sports.

I’m a very busy woman but I still find time to surf every day and hang out with my family.

What inspired you to start the Women Who Surf Facebook group?

I wanted to start a group to find other women who surfed who are also mothers. The group was originally called surf mamas until I was asked to change the name of the group because another group of women had bought the rights to that name.

These women wanted to either have access to my group or wanted me to change the name. So being the stubborn woman that I am I changed the name to “women who surf” which since then the group has grown! Big time!

How long have you been surfing and what do you love most about it?

I have been surfing since I was a teenager and I love everything about it. There’s just something about being free in the water. It’s so powerful and makes you feel alive. This feeling is addictive! It brings me mass amounts of joy and happiness.
